A lot of dialog on the question "what is an impact driver" are open on the internet today, and so many people seeking this insight are getting fed with the wrong information without knowing it. Some say an impact driver is just another regular cordless drill with a better clutch, others say it's another name for a hammer drill, yet some smart ones say it's not a hammer drill but they don't know what the hell the powerful tool is. Well, it's all good, the air is about to be cleared on this subject because BDCP, your stand up guy, has got your back. Now let's set straight the information.

The impact driver is a high-tech device used in power-driving of hard tasks, like strong-bolts, tough screws and any hard part of a machine that wouldn't easily be driven by a regular cordless drill. This means an impact driver is not a regular cordless drill.

Imagine trying to run a screw down a very strong material using a cordless drill. Moments into the task you notice your drill is meeting resistance and slightly changing its sound while your finger is steady on the trigger. This means your cordless drill is asking for help and the task at hand is somewhat bigger than what it was made for. Just as forcing a little boy to have chocolates when he is crying and telling you he is filled, would be futile, continued attempt to run the screw into that strong material using a cordless drill, would not yield any result and could even get your cordless drill damaged. Impact drivers are specifically made for tasks like this. In their competence, impact drivers run hard screws down a hard material in seconds and you wouldn't even feel any toughness. This is as a result of the technical structure of an impact driver.
It's not just enough to know what to say when someone asks "what is an impact driver", it is good you know how an impact driver actually does its job.

WHAT IS AN IMPACT DRIVER : Technical Structure Of An Impact Driver

When something gets heavily stuck on a work surface or the need to break a concrete surface arises in a manual workshop, what does the technician do? He doesn't get out a Philips screwdriver and a hammer to break-in the resistance. This would only leave him with a sprained wrist. He gets his concrete chisel and his mallet, and then "breaks the shit out of the resistance". He positions the concrete-chisel directly on the targeted spot and by impacting series of strong blows upon the concrete-chisel, using the mallet, this goal is accomplished. This is exactly what happens when you use an impact driver.

The impact driver is specifically designed for heavy tasks requiring strong torque and beastly handling. A task like this could as well be carried out manually by impacting series of hits with a hitting tool, but how many strikes can the fastest human being make in 0.5second, maybe 1 or 0. But the impact driver, being an ultra-high-tech device, makes up to 27 impacts in 0.5second (that is 3200 Impacts-Per-Minute) driving the bolt, screw or whatever it is, deep into the targeted spot or right out of the needed spot in a short while. One may say "but that's what a cordless drill would do", may I tell you that the average cordless drill delivers about 400" pound of torque, some other cordless drills, though they are very good drills too, deliver 115" pound of torque. What would 400" pound of torque do for a bolt that got stuck half-way through? Yea, nothing. But an average impact driver delivers about 1420" pound of torque, this torque is so strong and rapid, you will never catch an interval between 2 consecutive strikes. All you hear is a long continuous strike sound, (long like the hum of an electric clipper), completing all tough tasks in quick paces.
Impact drivers are beastly tools with beastly principles, they simply feature a motor-driven hammer that repeatedly strikes an anvil that drives the output shaft. As the load increases, they switch from spinning to a rapid-fire impact striking mode, in which every impact turns the screw farther, while the motor continues to spin and bring in cooling air.

With all these said, the next time you engage in a little dialog and someone goes like... "what is an impact driver?" you know how to point-beat that question. 🙂
